Thank You, Kirby

I'm a little late on this, but I still wanted to put it out there - THANK YOU, KIRBY!!

We might have backed into this, but who would you rather have? A guy that has learned under Nick Saban, Frank Beamer (and Bud Foster), Romeo Crennel, and Wade Phillips while scheming against the top offensive minds of the NFL? Or a guy that may or may not make his own calls as the DC for the world's biggest control freak in Saban?

If you were to put the resumes side-by-side, its not even close - Grantham blows Kirby out of the water. During the weekend of Kirby's big decision, I had heard that Kirby and Grantham would both be DC's in the SEC - we just didn't know which one would be in Athens and which one would be in Tuscaloosa. I got really worried that Saban was gonna pull one over on Richt. While most of the DawgNation was upset with Kirby for using his alma mater for a big payday @ Bama, I was thanking him for staying put while I remained hopeful that we would hire Grantham. Luckily, our search finally ended a few days later.

So, once again, Thank You, Kirby - I am glad you are still in Tuscaloosa. I am looking forward to the product that Grantham will put on the field every Saturday.

From the day WM was fired I did not want Kirby Smart as DC for one simple reason - we needed someone more experienced, not a young DC learning on the job. We already have that on the offensive side of the ball, as I explained in detail in a post linked above.

As far as I can tell, that opinion has been mine alone, though I suspect it is shared by some in Butts-Mehre.

Thanks for giving me some company, and for pointing out how Smart's hiring would have been a double-barrel backfire effect.

I said it from Day 1 - aside from Bud Foster, there is no one else who should have been in the discussion for this job other than Grantham. I wish he had been hired in mid-December, so the defensive recruits that UGA ended up losing could have had some more time to become familiar with him.

I'm fairly certain that he is the guy CMR wanted all along, but he was being pressured by some of the big-$$$, no-knowledge boosters to wait for the BCS title game to talk to Kirby. It all worked out fine in the end though.

I guess the next job Kirby takes will be as a head coach somewhere. You can look for him to run that program into the ground. Meanwhile, he can never show his face again in public in Athens. What an idiot. If you are going to interview with your alma mater, you better damn well be 100% sure you're going to make the move. He handled this whole deal about as poorly as he played safety.

JJ - I couldn't have said it better myself. I agree with everything you said.
